How to tailor a CV in 30 seconds — without rewriting it
Jorge Sánchez·14. august 2026
Tailoring is the biggest lever on reply rate. It doesn't mean rewriting from scratch. Mirror the JD's vocabulary, reorder your bullets, adjust three skills. That's the whole playbook.
Every job-hunt article talks about "tailoring your CV" but nobody says what tailoring actually is. In practice it's a set of three surgical edits — done in the right order, per JD, in under a minute after you've built the habit.
Emplirao's CV analysis does the tailoring extraction automatically — paste any JD, get the three specific edits your resume needs, applied directly to your current CV.
Tailor my CV automaticallyThe three edits, in order
1. Mirror the JD's exact vocabulary (10 seconds)
Boolean recruiter searches want exact matches. If the JD says "stakeholder management," your bullet says "stakeholder management," not "cross-functional coordination." Read the JD once. Circle the top 5 nouns. Verify each appears at least once in your CV in the exact form used.
2. Reorder bullets by JD relevance (15 seconds)
Recruiters read the first two bullets of your most recent role. Move the bullets that match the JD's top 2-3 requirements into those positions. Everything else stays as-is; keep chronological order for role blocks, but bullet order within a role is yours to optimize per application.
3. Swap 3 skills in your Skills section (10 seconds)
Your Skills section is a keyword-Boolean list — it exists to match the JD. If the JD mentions three technologies you have (but that aren't in your standard Skills list), promote them in. Demote three you HAVE listed but that don't appear in this JD. Total: three additions, three removals. Ten seconds after practice.
What NOT to do while tailoring
- Don't rewrite your Summary paragraph per application. Summaries are read by humans, not ATS keywords — updating them per JD is expensive time for near-zero return.
- Don't add roles or experience you don't have. Tailoring is reordering existing truth, not fabricating adjacent truth.
- Don't swap your entire template. Templates carry visual voice; changing template per application is expensive and doesn't affect ATS ranking.
Version-control the tailored versions. Keep the original as your master; save each tailored copy with the company name in the filename. When a recruiter calls three weeks later about a role you forgot applying to, you can pull up exactly what you sent them.
The three edits above only work if your CV parses cleanly in the first place. Start there — read the ATS resume guide.
