The XYZ bullet formula recruiters actually skim for
Jorge Sánchez·August 20, 2026
Accomplished X, as measured by Y, by doing Z. Google and McKinsey both teach it. It's the single change that lifts reply rate more than a new template — with real examples per profession.
Every resume tip industry has its favorite formula. XYZ is the one that keeps winning A/B tests because it's not a template — it's a checklist. Three questions per bullet: What did you accomplish? How do you know? What did you actually do?
Try the formula on your current CV — Emplirao's analysis flags every bullet that's missing an X, Y, or Z, with a specific rewrite suggestion grounded in your actual experience.
Analyze my bulletsWhat each letter means
- X = the accomplishment. "Grew activation," "reduced latency," "shipped the migration." Verb + outcome, not activity.
- Y = the metric. A percentage, a number, a time-to. "34%," "from 800ms to 120ms," "in 6 weeks vs planned 12."
- Z = the action. What YOU specifically did — a technical decision, a process change, a system built. Not the team's aggregate action.
Before and after, by profession
Weak bullet vs XYZ-formatted rewrite
| Profession | Weak | XYZ |
|---|---|---|
| Software engineer | Improved API performance and reduced errors. | Cut p95 API latency from 480ms to 140ms (Y) by introducing a Redis-backed query cache and batching downstream fan-out (Z), unblocking the Enterprise SLA (X). |
| Product manager | Led onboarding redesign, improving user experience. | Grew day-7 activation from 18% to 34% (X, Y) by rebuilding onboarding into three cohort-specific flows validated in a two-week A/B test (Z). |
| Marketing manager | Ran successful paid campaigns. | Lowered blended CAC by 42% (X, Y) by shifting spend from broad LinkedIn ads to intent-scoped Google keywords and adding a Reddit sub-community sponsorship (Z). |
| Data analyst | Built dashboards for stakeholders. | Halved time-to-decision on weekly ops reviews (X) — from 3 days to under 1 day (Y) — by consolidating six exec dashboards into a single dbt-modeled source-of-truth (Z). |
The two failure modes to watch
- Team-attribution creep: "Our team shipped X" is not YOUR accomplishment. Rewrite as "I did Z that let our team ship X." Own the action.
- Fake metrics: don't invent numbers. If you don't know the exact number, use a range ("~20-30% reduction") or a proxy ("cut deploy time by half a workday"). Recruiters detect fabricated precision fast.
Not every bullet needs a percentage. If the accomplishment is inherently non-numeric (a technical decision, a hire, a de-risking), the metric can be a qualitative signal — "unblocked the Q3 release," "passed SOC 2 with zero exceptions," "onboarded to lead role within 4 months."
