Resume for a Teacher — what recruiters actually reward

Teacher resumes are read by hiring principals, district HR, and increasingly by applicant-tracking systems configured to filter on state credential fields. Below is what actually gets you past all three.

Sections this resume should include

  1. 1.Header (name, licensure state, email, phone)
  2. 2.Certifications & Endorsements
  3. 3.Professional Summary (2-3 lines)
  4. 4.Teaching Experience
  5. 5.Education
  6. 6.Additional Roles (coaching, committees)
  7. 7.Skills (LMS, classroom tech, languages)

Keywords ATS filter on

These are the specific terms hiring platforms most commonly filter on for this role. Include them naturally in your bullets and skills section — don't stuff.

Bullets that work

Two examples of what strong bullets look like for this role — outcome-first, quantified, specific.

  • Raised 8th-grade Algebra I pass-rate from 62% to 84% across 3 sections (2023-24) by implementing weekly diagnostic quizzes and small-group reteaching.
  • Piloted a Google Classroom-based flipped-classroom model in 2 Physics sections; adopted district-wide the following year (12 schools, ~1,400 students).

Bullets that don't

The same information framed as tasks instead of outcomes. Recruiters skim these.

  • Responsible for teaching 8th-grade Algebra to multiple sections.
  • Helped students with assignments and communicated with parents.

Common mistakes to avoid

Leading with philosophy instead of outcomes

Opening with "passionate about educating young minds" gets skimmed. Lead with a measurable outcome — "raised 8th-grade Algebra pass-rate from 62% to 84% across 3 sections" — and put philosophy in the interview.

Burying credentials

Teaching license state + subject endorsement + certification level need to be in the top third of the resume. Districts filter on these fields specifically.

Listing every activity without impact

"Advisor to student council" says nothing. "Advised student council; scaled Winter Formal attendance from 120 to 340 over 2 years" says a lot.

Omitting technology fluency

Post-2021, districts filter for Google Classroom / Canvas / Schoology proficiency. Even if you've been teaching 20 years, name the LMS you use.
