Cover letter openers that don't sound like ChatGPT wrote them

Jorge Sánchez·August 16, 2026

The first sentence decides whether the rest gets read. Nine patterns that consistently earn the second paragraph — plus five you should retire today.

If you can rewrite your cover letter opener to name a specific product, launch, decision, blog post, or person from the target company, the letter starts to earn its 200 words. If you can't, it doesn't matter which template you use.

Nine openers that consistently work

  1. The product-you-use opener: "I've been running [product] for 18 months at [my company] — the [specific feature] that shipped last month solves the exact problem I'd been building around."
  2. The public-decision opener: "Your engineering blog post on [technical decision] hit a wall I've spent the last year on. The trade-off you called out — [specific] — is the reason I'm applying."
  3. The public-metric opener: "Your Q2 investor letter mentioned [metric] as the next constraint. I built the [system/process] that solved the same constraint at [prior company], and I'd like to bring that here."
  4. The alumni opener: "[Name] told me about the [team/project] opening — I worked with them at [prior company] on [thing], and they mentioned the [specific role need] you're facing."
  5. The talk / podcast opener: "Your [conference talk / podcast appearance] on [topic] articulated something I've been trying to build for three years. Applying because I think I can help ship the next version."
  6. The customer-story opener: "I was one of [customer segment] hit by [problem]. The way [company] handled the resolution — [specific] — is what convinced me to look for a role here."
  7. The competitor-decision opener: "Left [competitor company] last month after two years — the reason is exactly the thing your team is building. I want to be on the winning side of that call."
  8. The specific-hire opener: "Reading your team page, [name]'s work on [thing] and [name]'s work on [thing] point at a discipline mix I've spent the last five years building myself."
  9. The blunt opener: "Two-line pitch: I've done [specific thing] at [specific scale] and want to do it here. The rest is context if you want it."

Five openers that guarantee a skip

  • "I am writing to apply for the [role] position at [company]."
  • "I came across your job posting and was excited to see…"
  • "With over [N] years of experience in [field], I believe I am a strong candidate…"
  • "I am a passionate [role] with a proven track record of…"
  • "Please accept this letter as my application for the [role] position."

The five failing openers share one property: they could apply to any role at any company. The nine working openers all fail that test — swap the company name and they stop making sense. That's the diagnostic.

The rest of the letter matters less than the opener — but the whole structure has to fit under 200 words. Read the complete cover letter guide for the three-paragraph frame that consistently ships.
